1st Cavalry Division, Horse Cavalry Detachment

This is an amazing place to visit and it is free! Also, on Thursdays, they have cavalry reenactments from the 1800’s period at 10AM I think. Wonderful for family’s and you get to meet the horses! God bless our country and may He forever bless the men and women of our armed services!

They're open from dawn to dusk for visitors/tours. We had to call the desk to find that out, so there's the info if you're interested in visiting! We loved getting a tour of the horses. We brought our baby to look at them and he loved it, until he fell asleep lol. We got to pet the horses, and the Sergeant that gave us the tour told us a ton of history and all the names of the horse. We went after the cold front, so it was partially flooded and muddy, so make sure you wear the correct shoes!

Whether you're a 1st Cav vet, or just someone interested in military history it's worth checking out the 1st CD Horse Detachment. I recently stopped by and SGT Allen dropped what he was doing and gave me a tour of the horse barn and cheerfully answered my questions. The leather shop is very impressive where they meticulously make their own tack & period correct saddles; they even make their own boots! Also the detachment has in house farriers to make horseshoes and care for the hooves of the troopers mounts. Pentagon bean counters sadly want to do away with these Army ambassadors which would be a pity.

The grounds are pretty well kept and the soldiers that work there are friendly. They gave a decent barn tour but you can tell they are not tour guides nor do they have any specific guidelines for what to speak on during the tour. The horses were well taken care of and were very friendly. They even interacted with my kids quite a bit and followed them along the fences of their stalls. Overall it was a good experience and we’ll be back again!

I really love these guys; it’s such a cool program. They do many different public events and allow the public to come and visit. This is a very cool program that the Army has which focuses on respecting and understanding our military history.

Took kids to see horses. Calvaryman was very nice, gave tour and told about the many horses we met. Little ones picked grass to feed the horses. Very nice that we did not have to enter Fort proper to visit

It's nice that you can go see the horses and they do demo shows. Definitely worth visiting if you come to Hood
